Why run this race?

This year, the 5th annual Strides Against Sarcoma trail race/walk is set for November 9, 2019, on the Rush Pond Trail in Queensbury.  A local woman, Caroline Savitz initiated this event after being diagnosed with epithelioid sarcoma in 2014.  At age 25, Caroline passed away on September 21, 2016.  We are committed to seeing her vision to cure sarcoma and help families who are struggling with this life-changing cancer.

Sarcoma is a rare cancer that grows in connective tissue: bones, cartilage, muscle, fat, nerves, and blood vessels.  It accounts for just 1 percent of all cancer, yet 20 percent of all pediatric cancers are sarcoma.  Because of these factors and its initial slow growth, it is often difficult to detect and often misdiagnosed.  When it is detected, the tumor is often too large to provide hope of a cure.

The last three years of Strides Against Sarcoma have been a huge success.  We have donated more than $45,000 to the following: Caroline’s Craft Carts at Glens Falls Hospital, the Sarcoma Foundation of America, and last year, the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society.  This money helped fund a two-year sarcoma research grant through Dr. Matthew DiCaprio, director of orthopaedic oncology at Albany Medical Center.

We know that Caroline would be pleased with our community’s support and efforts in raising money for continued research.  Caroline felt so blessed within her community, and we know she would be proud of us all for continuing to make a difference.
